Air Conditioner Replacement
Central AC Replacement for Shore Summers
An air conditioner that struggles through July, or quits on the first hot weekend, usually has more going on than a single bad part. Age, salt air, and refrigerant changes all affect whether repairing it still makes sense.
We give you a straight comparison between fixing your current AC and replacing it, and if replacement is the better move, we size the new system for your home.

What changes when you replace an air conditioner
Outdoor AC units near the coast work hard. Salt spray and humid air corrode coils, cabinets, and electrical connections faster than they would inland, so shore-area condensers often wear out sooner than the national averages suggest.
When we replace an AC, we look at the indoor coil too. A new condenser connected to an old, mismatched coil won’t deliver its rated efficiency, and newer refrigerants such as R-454B require compatible components. In many cases the right move is replacing the coil along with the outdoor unit.
It’s also a good time to ask whether a heat pump makes more sense. A heat pump looks and installs much like a central AC but also heats the home, which can reduce how much you rely on your furnace.
Repair or replace your air conditioner?
We’ll quote the repair and the replacement so you can compare them directly. Here’s how we generally think about it.
Repair usually makes sense when
- The unit is under about 10 years old
- The problem is a capacitor, contactor, fan motor, or similar part
- The coil is clean and free of significant corrosion
- It cooled the house well until recently
Replacement is worth pricing when
- The compressor has failed on an older unit
- The coil is leaking or badly corroded from salt air
- It uses R-22, which is no longer manufactured
- Repairs would cost a large share of a new system
- Your cooling bills have climbed steadily
What affects the cost of AC replacement
We quote every AC replacement after seeing the system. These factors drive the price.
- Capacity
- System size in tons, based on your home’s cooling load.
- Efficiency (SEER2)
- Higher-efficiency and variable-speed units cost more and run quieter and cheaper.
- Indoor coil
- Replacing the coil to match the new condenser adds to cost but protects efficiency.
- Line set
- Existing refrigerant lines may be reused or need replacing.
- Pad and placement
- Raised stands or relocation for flood zones or salt exposure.
- Electrical
- Updated disconnects or circuits to meet current code.

AC Replacement questions
Why do AC units wear out faster at the shore?
Salt and moisture corrode aluminum coil fins, copper tubing, and electrical parts. Regular rinsing and inspection help, and placement away from direct spray can extend equipment life.
Do I have to replace the indoor coil too?
Usually, if the coil is older or wasn’t designed for the new refrigerant. A matched coil is needed for the system to reach its rated efficiency and for some manufacturer warranty terms.
Can my old AC be recharged with refrigerant instead?
Adding refrigerant without fixing the leak is a short-term fix. R-22 systems are especially costly to recharge since that refrigerant is no longer produced.
How long does AC replacement take?
A like-for-like replacement is typically finished in a day. Coil, line set, or electrical changes may add time.
