Heat Pump Replacement

Heat Pump Replacement Built for Coastal Conditions

Heat pumps run in both summer and winter, so they usually wear out faster than a furnace or an AC alone. Near the shore, salt air adds to that wear.

We help you decide when it’s time to replace and choose a new heat pump that handles our winters, our humidity, and our salt air.

What’s changed in heat pumps

Heat pumps installed 12–15 years ago struggled when temperatures dropped below freezing and leaned heavily on electric backup heat. Today’s cold-climate and variable-speed models keep heating efficiently in much colder weather, which can noticeably reduce winter electric bills.

New heat pumps also use newer refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. They aren’t compatible with older R-22 or R-410A equipment, so the indoor air handler or coil usually needs to be replaced along with the outdoor unit.

Near the coast, we also pay attention to placement. Raising the unit above snow and flood levels, keeping it out of direct salt spray where possible, and asking about coil coatings can all help a new heat pump last longer.

Repair or replace your heat pump?

We’ll compare the repair cost with replacement and explain what each means for your bills. Here’s how we usually weigh it.

Repair usually makes sense when

  • The heat pump is under about 10 years old
  • The issue is a defrost board, capacitor, fan motor, or sensor
  • The outdoor coil is in good condition
  • It heated and cooled well until recently

Replacement is worth pricing when

  • The compressor failed on an older unit
  • The coil is badly corroded or leaking
  • It relies heavily on backup electric heat
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant
  • Repair costs approach a large share of a new system

What affects the cost of heat pump replacement

We quote each heat pump replacement after seeing the system. These factors matter most.

Cold-climate performance
Models rated for low temperatures cost more and reduce backup heat use.
Variable speed
Inverter-driven units are quieter and more efficient.
Indoor unit
Air handler or coil replacement to match refrigerant and efficiency.
Ducted or ductless
Replacing a ductless system differs from a ducted one.
Stands and placement
Raised stands or wall brackets for snow, flood, or salt exposure.
Electrical
Updated circuits or disconnects.

Heat Pump Replacement questions

How long do heat pumps last near the shore?

Often around 10–15 years, depending on maintenance and salt exposure. Regular coil cleaning and good placement can help.

Can I keep my existing air handler?

Sometimes, if it’s relatively new and compatible with the new refrigerant. Most older air handlers should be replaced with the outdoor unit for efficiency and compatibility.

Should I add a furnace as backup?

In most Cape May County homes, a cold-climate heat pump with electric backup is enough. Homes with gas service and high heat loss may benefit from a dual-fuel setup.

How long does replacement take?

Usually one to two days, depending on whether the indoor unit is replaced too.
