HVAC System Replacement
HVAC System Replacement Without the Guesswork
When an older heating and cooling system starts needing repairs every season, it’s fair to ask whether you’re better off replacing it. The answer depends on age, condition, and what each option will cost over the next several years.
We inspect what you have, tell you plainly whether a repair still makes sense, and if it doesn’t, quote a replacement sized for your home rather than copied from the old label.

Replacing the whole system or just one part
Most central systems have two halves: an outdoor unit (an air conditioner or heat pump) and an indoor unit (a furnace or air handler) with a coil. They’re designed to work as a matched set. Replacing only the outdoor unit on an older system can leave you with a mismatched coil, lower efficiency, and refrigerant compatibility problems.
That’s why we usually recommend replacing both halves together when the system is older. If one side is relatively new and in good shape, we’ll say so and price a partial replacement instead.
New outdoor equipment now uses lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32, which aren’t interchangeable with older R-22 or R-410A systems. We check whether your existing line set can be reused or should be replaced as part of the job.
Repair or replace? How we help you decide
There’s no single age where replacement becomes automatic. We look at the condition of the equipment, the cost of the repair, and how long the rest of the system is likely to last, then give you both numbers.
Repair usually makes sense when
- The system is under about 10–12 years old and otherwise in good shape
- The failed part is a common, moderately priced component
- It’s been reliable until now with regular maintenance
- Comfort and operating costs have been acceptable
Replacement is worth pricing when
- A major component like a compressor or heat exchanger has failed on an older unit
- The system runs on R-22, which is no longer produced
- You’ve paid for several significant repairs in the last few years
- Some rooms never get comfortable, which points to sizing or duct problems
- You want better efficiency or to switch to a heat pump
What affects the cost of a system replacement
Every replacement is quoted after an in-person visit. These factors make the biggest difference.
- Full or partial replacement
- Replacing both indoor and outdoor units costs more but avoids mismatched equipment.
- System type
- Furnace with AC, heat pump, and dual-fuel systems are priced differently.
- Efficiency and staging
- Variable-speed and higher-SEER2 equipment costs more up front.
- Line set and refrigerant
- Some line sets can be reused; others need replacing for newer refrigerants.
- Ductwork condition
- Leaky or undersized ducts may need repair or sealing to get the full benefit.
- Electrical and venting
- New circuits, disconnects, or furnace venting changes add to scope.

HVAC Replacement questions
How long does a full system replacement take?
Most straightforward replacements take one to two days. Jobs that involve new ductwork, electrical upgrades, or a change of system type can take longer, and we’ll give you a timeline in the quote.
Can I replace just the AC and keep my furnace?
Sometimes. If the furnace is fairly new and its coil is compatible with the new outdoor unit, a partial replacement can work. If the furnace is older, replacing both together usually makes more sense.
Should I switch to a heat pump when I replace?
It’s worth considering. Our coastal winters are mild enough that a heat pump can handle most heating needs. Homes with high heat loss may be better served by a dual-fuel setup that keeps a gas furnace as backup.
What happens to my old equipment?
We recover the refrigerant as required and remove the old equipment from your property.
