Heat Pump Repair
Heat Pump Repair for Heating and Cooling Problems
Heat pumps work harder than any other HVAC system because they run all year. When one starts icing over, blowing cold air in winter, or getting stuck in one mode, we can track down why.
We repair ducted and ductless heat pumps from all major manufacturers throughout Cape May County.

Problems unique to heat pumps
Unlike an AC, a heat pump reverses its refrigerant flow to heat in winter, and periodically defrosts its outdoor coil. That adds components (a reversing valve, defrost control board, and outdoor temperature sensors) that can fail and cause symptoms an AC technician might misread.
A heat pump that’s low on refrigerant or has a failing defrost system will often lean on its backup electric heat strips without you noticing until the electric bill arrives. We check that the system is actually heating with the heat pump, not just the backup.

Heat Pump Repair questions
Is some frost on my heat pump normal?
Yes, light frost in winter is normal and the system defrosts itself periodically. A thick block of ice that stays for hours means something isn’t working.
Why is my electric bill so high in winter?
If the heat pump isn’t keeping up, the backup heat strips take over, and they use far more electricity. Low refrigerant, a defrost problem, or incorrect thermostat settings are common causes.
What’s the steam coming from my outdoor unit?
That’s normal during a defrost cycle. The melting frost evaporates as steam. It should stop within a few minutes.
Should I pour hot water on an iced-up heat pump?
Please don’t. It can damage the fins and refreeze. Switch the system to emergency heat and give us a call.
