Troubleshooting any heating system
Heating problems usually fall into a few groups: the system won’t start, it starts but shuts off, it runs but doesn’t heat enough, or it heats unevenly. Each points to different causes, from a dirty flame sensor or failed igniter on a furnace to a defrost problem or low refrigerant on a heat pump.
We start with the basics (thermostat, power, filter, and gas supply) and work through the system methodically. For furnaces, we always check venting and the heat exchanger, because a heating repair should leave your home safer, not just warmer.

Heating Repair questions
What should I check before calling?
Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and has working batteries, the breaker is on, the furnace switch is on, and the filter isn’t clogged. If those are fine, call us.
My heat pump is blowing cool air in winter. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. During a defrost cycle it may briefly blow cooler air. If it lasts more than 10–15 minutes or the house is losing heat, something needs attention.
Should I worry about carbon monoxide?
Every home with a gas furnace should have working CO detectors. If one sounds, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 first, then us.
Is it worth repairing an old furnace?
Minor repairs usually are. If a furnace is near 20 years old and needs a major component like a heat exchanger or control board, replacement often makes more sense.
