Heating System Replacement
Replacing an Old Heating System Before It Fails
The worst time to shop for a new heating system is on a January night with no heat. If your system is getting old or unreliable, planning a replacement ahead of time gives you more options and less stress.
We’ll look at what you have now, tell you how much life it likely has left, and help you decide whether to replace with the same type of system or switch.

Like-for-like or a different system?
Many replacements are straightforward: an old furnace swapped for a new, more efficient one. But replacement is also the best time to reconsider. A home that’s heated with an aging furnace and cooled with an aging AC might be better off with a heat pump or dual-fuel system that handles both.
Fuel matters too. Homes on oil or propane have more reason to look at heat pumps, while homes with natural gas may prefer to keep a furnace and add a heat pump for shoulder seasons.
Whatever you choose, we size the new system to your home’s actual heat loss. Many older systems were oversized, which leads to short cycling, uneven heat, and higher fuel use.
Should you repair or replace your heat?
Safety comes first. If a furnace has a cracked heat exchanger or venting problem, we’ll tell you right away. Otherwise, it comes down to age, repair cost, and reliability.
Repair usually makes sense when
- The system is under about 12 years old
- The issue is an igniter, flame sensor, pressure switch, or capacitor
- There are no safety concerns with venting or combustion
- It has been reliable with regular maintenance
Replacement is worth pricing when
- The heat exchanger is cracked or the system fails a safety check
- A major component like the control board or blower failed on an older unit
- Repairs are becoming frequent
- Your home has uneven heat that repairs haven’t fixed
- You want to switch fuels or add cooling
What affects the cost of heating replacement
We quote each replacement after an in-home visit. These factors matter most.
- Same type or switch
- Like-for-like is simpler; switching fuels or system types adds scope.
- Efficiency
- Condensing furnaces and variable-speed heat pumps cost more up front.
- Venting changes
- Moving from a chimney-vented furnace to PVC venting.
- Electrical
- Heat pumps may need a new circuit or panel capacity.
- Ductwork
- Ducts may need repair, sealing, or resizing.
- Old equipment removal
- Removing oil tanks or old boilers, where applicable, adds work.

Heating Replacement questions
When is the best time to replace a heating system?
Early fall or late spring, before or after the heating season. Scheduling is easier and you won’t be without heat while deciding.
Can I replace my oil furnace with a heat pump?
Yes. Existing ductwork can often be reused, and some homeowners keep a backup heat source for the coldest nights.
What is a cracked heat exchanger?
The heat exchanger separates combustion gases from the air in your home. A crack can let carbon monoxide escape, so a furnace with a cracked heat exchanger should be shut down and replaced or repaired.
How long does heating replacement take?
Most furnace or heat pump swaps take one to two days. Fuel conversions or ductwork changes may take longer.
