Multi-Zone Mini-Splits

Multi-Zone Mini-Split Systems for Whole-House Comfort

A multi-zone mini-split connects several indoor heads to one outdoor unit, so you can heat and cool multiple rooms, each at its own temperature, without any ductwork.

It’s a practical way to bring year-round comfort to a whole house that was never built for central air, or to the parts of a house central air never reached.

How multi-zone systems work

Each indoor head serves a zone, usually one room or one open area, and has its own controls. The outdoor unit adjusts its output to match what the zones are calling for, which avoids heating or cooling empty rooms.

Design is the key part. Each head must be sized to its room, and the total has to work with the outdoor unit’s capacity. Too large a head in a small room short-cycles and leaves the air damp; too small and the room never catches up.

Sometimes two or more separate single-zone systems are a better fit than one multi-zone unit, especially when rooms are far apart or one area runs constantly. We’ll recommend whichever layout suits the house.

How we design a multi-zone system

  1. Step 1

    Zone plan

We decide which rooms get their own head.

  2. Step 2

    Room-by-room sizing

Each head sized for its space, not the whole house.

  3. Step 3

    Layout and routing

Head placement, line routes, and outdoor unit location.

  4. Step 4

    Install and test

Every zone tested and controls explained.

Why homeowners choose multi-zone

Room-by-room control

Each zone runs at its own temperature.

No ducts required

Avoids the cost and disruption of adding ductwork.

One outdoor unit

Several rooms served from a single condenser.

Heating and cooling

Heat pump operation provides year-round comfort.

Indoor unit styles

  • High-wall heads
  • Ceiling cassettes
  • Floor consoles
  • Concealed ducted air handlers
  • Mixed styles on one system

Multi-Zone Mini-Split Installation questions

How many rooms can one outdoor unit serve?

It depends on the outdoor unit model and the sizes of the indoor heads. We’ll design a system that matches your layout, which may be one multi-zone unit or a combination of systems.

Can each room be set to a different temperature?

Yes. Each indoor head has its own controls. On most multi-zone systems the zones share one mode, so they all heat or all cool at the same time.

Is multi-zone better than separate single-zone units?

Not always. Separate systems can make sense when rooms are far apart or have very different needs. We’ll explain the trade-offs for your house.

Can a multi-zone system replace my oil or propane heat?

In many homes it can provide most or all of the heat. Some homeowners keep the existing system as backup for the coldest nights.
