Ductless Mini-Split Replacement
Replacing an Older Ductless Mini-Split
Mini-splits last a long time when they’re cleaned and serviced, but salt air, years of heavy summer use, and refrigerant leaks eventually catch up with them. When an older system starts failing, replacing it can make more sense than another repair.
We look at the indoor heads, the outdoor unit, the line set, and the mounting before recommending anything, and we’ll tell you if a repair still makes sense.

What changes when you replace a mini-split
A mini-split replacement isn’t always a straight swap. Indoor heads and outdoor units are designed as a matched system, so an older indoor head generally can’t be reused with a new outdoor unit from a different generation or brand.
Newer equipment may use a different refrigerant than your original system. We check whether the existing refrigerant lines are the right size, in good condition, and can be properly cleaned, or whether new lines are the better choice.
Replacement is also a chance to fix what didn’t work the first time: a head that blows directly on a bed, an outdoor unit sitting in a spot that collects sand or snow, or a room the original system never quite kept up with.
Repair or replace your mini-split?
There’s no fixed age where a mini-split must be replaced. These are the factors we weigh with you.
Repair usually makes sense when
- The problem is a sensor, drain, fan motor, or board
- The system is relatively young and has been maintained
- Parts are readily available for your model
- The coil and outdoor unit are in good physical condition
Replacement is worth pricing when
- The compressor has failed on an older unit
- Refrigerant leaks keep returning
- Salt-air corrosion has damaged the outdoor coil or cabinet
- You want more zones or better heating performance
What affects the cost of a replacement
We quote replacements after seeing the system. These are the main variables.
- Number of zones
- Each indoor head adds equipment and labor.
- Line set reuse
- Reusing good lines can reduce cost; replacing them adds labor.
- Mounting
- Wall brackets, stands, and elevated mounts differ in cost.
- Efficiency level
- Higher-efficiency and cold-climate models cost more up front.

Ductless Mini-Split Replacement questions
Can I keep my indoor heads and replace only the outdoor unit?
Usually not. Indoor and outdoor units are designed to work together, so mismatching generations or brands typically isn’t supported. We’ll confirm for your specific system.
Can you reuse my existing refrigerant lines?
Sometimes. It depends on line size, condition, and the refrigerant the new system uses. We check before quoting.
Do you install the new system in the same spot?
Often, but not always. If the old placement caused drafts, uneven comfort, or service problems, we’ll suggest a better location.
Is financing available?
Yes. Ask about our current financing offers. Terms are subject to credit approval.
