Heating Maintenance

Fall Heating Tune-Ups and Safety Checks

The first cold night of fall is when every furnace in the county gets turned on, and when the ones that weren’t maintained start to fail.

A fall tune-up gets your system cleaned, tested, and safety-checked before you need it.

More than a cleaning

For gas furnaces, our tune-up covers the burners, flame sensor, igniter, inducer, and blower, plus a combustion and venting check. We inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, verify the safety switches work, and measure gas pressure and temperature rise.

For heat pumps, we check refrigerant pressures, test the defrost cycle and reversing valve, verify backup heat strips, and clean the outdoor coil. Either way, we check the thermostat and replace or inspect the filter.

Heating Maintenance questions

When should I schedule heating maintenance?

Early fall is ideal, before you need heat every day. If you missed it, a winter tune-up is still worthwhile.

How long does a tune-up take?

Usually about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the system and what we find.

Do heat pumps need fall maintenance if they were serviced in spring?

Heat pumps run year-round, so twice-yearly service is recommended. The fall visit focuses on heating-specific components like defrost controls and backup heat.

Should I replace my own filter between visits?

Yes. Check it monthly in winter and replace it when it looks dirty, typically every one to three months.
